What to see in Santa Maria da Feira - Guide to a Getaway

Only 30 minutes from Porto, Santa Maria da Feira is one of the most surprising jewels in the north of Portugal. A city with more than a thousand years of history, it is dominated by a medieval castle straight out of a fairy tale, the stage for some of the country's greatest popular traditions, and the setting for a gastronomy that has earned it the status of UNESCO Creative City in the area of gastronomy.
If you're planning a getaway to the north of Portugal - or if you're already in Porto and are looking for something different to do in one day - this guide will show you what to see in Santa Maria da Feira: the main points of interest, unmissable events and tips for getting the most out of your visit.
1. Santa Maria da Feira Castle
It is the ex-libris of the city, and almost certainly the main reason for your visit. O Santa Maria da Feira Castle is one of the best preserved medieval monuments in Portugal, dating back to the 10th century and classified as National Monument since 1910. Their four towers in Coruchéu - conical pinnacles - unusual in Portuguese military architecture - give it a unique, almost magical silhouette.
You can climb the keep, walk the ramparts, visit the Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. Admission costs just 3 euros and the visit takes about an hour.

2. Quinta do Castelo and City Park
A few metres from the castle is the Quinta do Castelo, a romantic park with more than 300 years of history. It's a magical place: centuries-old trees, trails, an artificial lake, a bridge and even an artificial cave - all in a setting that combines nature and heritage.
It is one of the most beautiful places for a peaceful stroll, especially in autumn, when the leaves of the beeches, sequoias, cork oaks and magnolias create an unforgettable palette. Among its remarkable trees are centuries-old specimens, classified as Guardians of the Castle.
In December, the Quinta is transformed into the “Dreamland” and hosts Perlim, one of Portugal's largest Christmas theme parks - perfect for families with children.
3. Historic centre and Mother Church
The historic centre of Santa Maria da Feira retains the charm of small medieval Portuguese towns. It's worth wandering through the narrow streets, stopping at traditional pastry shops and discovering some architectural landmarks:
- Holy Spirit Parish Church - where the Solemn Mass of the Fogaceiras Festival is held. Imposing and accessible by a monumental staircase.
- Misericórdia Church - 17th century, with 18th century staircase and fountain.
- Chapel of Our Lady of the Castle - small but with an unforgettable setting, next to the ramparts.
- Convent of the Lóios - currently houses the Convento dos Lóios Museum.
4. Convento dos Lóios Museum
Housed in the former Convento dos Lóios (16th century), this museum is dedicated to the history and culture of Santa Maria da Feira. It brings together collections of archaeology, ethnography, industry and local history - including pieces recovered from the Castro de Romariz, a Celtic citadel nearby.
It's the best way to understand the various historical layers of the region, from its Castro and Roman origins to the formation of Terra de Santa Maria.
5. Museum of Santa Maria de Lamas (Cork Museum)
A few kilometres from the centre, in Lamas, is one of the region's most surprising museums. O Museum of Santa Maria de Lamas was born from the personal collection of Henrique Alves de Amorim, a cork industrial philanthropist, and occupies his former manor house.
It has 16 rooms with tiles, tapestries, paintings, baroque sculptures, religious pieces - and an extraordinary collection of works made in cork, which is the real soul of the museum. A curiosity: there is a complete version of the Calvary monument here, carved out of cork.
6. Thermal Baths of São Jorge
A few minutes from the centre, in Caldas de São Jorge, are the Thermal Baths of São Jorge, known for generations for their sulphurous waters with therapeutic properties. The waters are recommended for musculoskeletal, respiratory and skin problems.
The spa Thermal Baths of São Jorge offers wellness programmes, Vichy-style massages, thermal baths and detox rituals - an excellent way to combine a cultural visit with a moment of relaxation.
7. Lourosa Zoo - Ornithological Park
O Lourosa Zoo is the the only ornithological aviary park open to the public in Portugal. Ideal for families with children, it is home to hundreds of species of birds from all continents - from colourful parrots to birds of prey and flamingos.
It's a small but well-kept space, with a strong educational component, and can be visited in around two hours.
8. Visionarium - Science Centre
O Visionarium is an interactive living science centre, especially popular with families with children and young people. With permanent exhibitions on the universe, the Earth, life and technology, it's a good choice for a rainy day or to complement a more cultural visit.
9. Unmissable events throughout the year
Santa Maria da Feira is a city that lives its traditions to the full. If you can time your visit to coincide with one of these events, the experience takes on a whole new dimension:
Fogaceiras Festival (20th January)
A tradition more than 520 years old. The fiery girls, dressed in white, they carry the voting fags (sweet bread in the shape of the castle towers) in an exciting procession through the historic centre. It's a municipal holiday - the whole city celebrates this day.
Imaginarius (May)
One of the biggest international street theatre festivals of Portugal, with companies from various countries. The streets and squares of the historic centre are transformed into stages.
Medieval Journey in Terra de Santa Maria (end of July to beginning of August)
Europe's largest medieval recreation. For 12 days, the historic centre is transformed into the Middle Ages: jousts, banquets, artisan markets, fire shows, video mapping on the walls. It celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026.
Perlim - Christmas Theme Park (December)
At Quinta do Castelo, it's the most magical Christmas event in the region, especially for families with children.
