Convento dos Lóios Museum: a visit with time in Santa Maria da Feira
There are places that explain a city without raising your voice. The Convento dos Lóios Museum is one of them. Housed in the former Convento dos Lóios, in the historic centre of Santa Maria da Feira, it houses archaeology, local history, ethnography and art. It's a serene visit, made up of layers: the ancient Land of Santa Maria, the forts, the Castle, the trades and the daily life of the municipality.
For those staying in Zen & Art - Charming Accommodation, The museum is a natural suggestion for a leisurely morning or afternoon. The house breathes culture; the museum helps you read the territory that surrounds it.
A convent dating back to the 16th century
The history of the Convento dos Lóios begins with the Counts of Feira. The project was born out of the will of the 3rd Count of Feira, D. Manuel Pereira, and was later taken over by Diogo Forjaz Pereira and D. Ana de Meneses. Ana de Meneses. The foundation of Casa da Feira was confirmed on 3 July 1550.
The first stone was laid on 6 May 1560, the feast day of St John the Evangelist, on the site of the old Chapel of the Holy Spirit. A few years later, the Secular Canons of St John the Evangelist, also known as the Blue Canons, already had a church and convent fit for habitation.
With the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the building passed to the municipal administration. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was used for various public purposes: theatre, county jail, offices, registry offices and court. In 1992, the Municipal Museum moved into the former convent. The building has once again welcomed the city, now through memory.
What you'll find at the Convento dos Lóios Museum
The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history and heritage of the municipality. The route brings together sections on archaeology, history and ethnography, with an insight into the origins of man, the evolution of the territory and the development of Santa Maria.
Visitors will find references to Romariz Hillfort, Fiães Hillfort, Santa Maria da Feira Castle and the old town fair. There is also space for traditional trades, such as shoemaking, cooperage, pottery, weaving and yoking, and for industrial activities that are important in the region, including the cork stopper industry and the paper industry.
The archaeological collection brings visitors closer to some of the county's oldest sites. Among the pieces on display are objects associated with the Romariz hillfort, the Fiães hillfort and the castle. It's a good way to give context to what you see later, in the streets and monuments.
The museum also includes the António Joaquim Room, with works donated by Master António Joaquim. The temporary programme changes throughout the year and gives another reason to return, especially when the trip is designed around a specific exhibition.
Why it's worth a visit
The Castle shows the military and manorial presence of Santa Maria da Feira. The Convento dos Lóios Museum shows the territory from the inside: the communities, the trades, the material life, the archaeology and the continuity of the city.
It's an especially interesting visit for those who like heritage with context. It works well on rainy days, family trips and weekend getaways when there's time to see more than the main monument. It doesn't require a whole morning, but it does demand attention.
On a one-day itinerary, you can combine the museum with the Castle, the historic centre and a stop to taste the fogaça. With two days, add the Termas de S. Jorge, the Paper Museum or a walk around Quinta do Castelo. Santa Maria da Feira is best when you don't rush through it.
